AUSTRALIA NEEDS A PAY RISE

March 13, 2019

No person should live in poverty but that is exactly what the current minimum wage guarantees.

The TWU supports an ACTU submission to be made to Fair Work’s Annual Wage Review to introduce a living wage for low-paid workers over two years, starting with a $43 per week raise this year.

Some Australians are working overtime and six days a week and still live under the breadline.

Big business will say that the sky will fall in if wages rise – but they would – because profits are currently rising FIVE TIMES faster than wages. That’s why they have let wages stagnate.

Currently the minimum wage is below the OECD definition of relative poverty, which is 60% of median earnings.

Australia needs a pay rise and it’s time to #ChangeTheRules to win it.
