BUNCH OF SHOW OFFS!

October 5, 2017

Most Australians would agree that too many public holidays are barely enough and know to call the union if an employer is trying to force them to work a public holiday.

And so it was for TWU (Vic/Tas Branch) members working for Toll Tasmania out of its Burnie and Devonport depots who raised concerns a while back about a long-standing company policy of rostering them to work on the local Show Day Public Holiday.

Yeah, that’s what we thought. No fairy floss or dodgem cars for these guys.

But we are happy to report that, following a dispute resolution process, the company has agreed to allow TWU members to enjoy show day off like the rest of Devonport and Burnie residents. Hope you have a good time in Burnie this weekend.

Toll Tasmania will now use volunteers on these days and, if there are insufficient volunteers, engage contractors and casual employees to fill any necessary driving, yard and warehousing requirements.

We wish those members an enjoyable day off and encourage any other members experiencing workplace or rostering issues that just do not feel right to contact the TWU. It never hurts to ask about ‘show bag’ situations.
