Second Montague St Bridge gantry installed

June 2, 2016

A second height-warning gantry was installed on the city-side of the Montague St Bridge in South Melbourne last night.

The work, undertaken by VicRoads, occurred on the notoriously crash-prone site about a week after the first warning system – a gantry on the other side – had been installed.

Authorities believe placing a gantry on either side of the bridge will significantly decrease the number of trucks and vans crashing into the 3m-high overpass. Drivers are alerted that their vehicle is too tall to pass underneath the bridge if it thumps into rubber paddles handing from the gantry frame at about 3m.

A total of 102 smashes have occurred at the infamous bridge, including a Ballarat tourist bus in February.
