Avalon expansion and Tasmanian freight strategy

An expansion of services at Avalon Airport could have both direct and indirect benefits for TWU members.

Jetstar – the only commercial airline that uses the airport – has announced new services to Adelaide and Hobart will begin next March.

Victorian Labor Government Minister for Industry Lily D’Ambrosio said it was a boost for local jobs.

“We are committed to growing the local aviation industry, because it means jobs for locals and a stronger state,” she said.

The airline will offer three weekly flights to Adelaide and four to Hobart.

Local authorities are investigating how the arrangement could boost the state’s freight capacity.

To that end, the Draft Tasmanian Integrated Freight Strategy which identifies 33 possible actions.

Most notably, prioritising freight planning and investment on Tasmania’s key land freight corridor between Burnie and Hobart; detailed planning for a primary domestic container port at Burnie; and supporting expanded capacity and service choice across Bass Strait.
