The TWU (Vic/Tas Branch) sends its condolences to the family of a motorist who sadly lost their life following an accident involving a truck and several vehicles on the Calder Freeway on Tuesday 24th May 2016.
The accident occurred outbound near Milleara Road, Keilor Park, 17km north-west of Melbourne’s CBD, at about 8.05am.
Victoria Police said a Toll fuel tanker was in the centre lane of the freeway when a car has pulled in front of it. The truck driver was forced to swerve and lost control of the vehicle, striking several cars.
One car was crushed under the truck during the incident with the occupant of that vehicle losing their life. Six other people have been to taken to hospital, all are reportedly in a stable condition and the Union wishes them a speedy recovery.
TWU (Vic/Tas Branch) Branch Secretary John Berger said the incident was a brutal reminder for all motorists to drive safely at all times.
“Already this year we have had 119 people lose their lives on Victoria’s roads. I implore all road users to drive safely so that they, and all other road users, return home safely at the end of their journey,” Mr Berger said.
Any concerned drivers are encouraged to speak with the TWU. Further, if drivers or the general public require counselling they are encouraged to speak with the Union who can arrange relevant referral services.
