Union power was in full force when your TWU (Vic/Tas Branch) grassroots leaders gathered at Moonee Valley Racecourse on August 2.
The Branch Workplace Leaders Conference focused on the TWU’s mission of defending the rights and dignity of all transport workers and ensuring they have real and decent jobs, a secure future, safe working conditions, living wages and a good quality of life for themselves and their families.
The conference was a roaring success and we thank all Branch Delegates and Occupational Health & Safety Representatives who attended and event sponsors and union partners who helped make it such a special occasion.
Branch Secretary John Berger opened proceedings with a rousing call to action for transport workers.
A key theme of the day was to discuss the Union’s 2020 action plans, when transport workers across Australia will unite to fight for better and safer jobs – regardless of what transport company you work for.
TWU National President Michael Kaine said TWU members were demanding big companies ensured all workers received union rates and conditions down supply chains.
“We will demand it and fight together right across Australia to win it back … and we will win,” he said.
Conference speakers also equipped attendees with the latest developments in superannuation, mental health and workplace law to take back to yards to assist members.
And congratulations again to our Bus Delegates who took to the stage to share their success story of the 2018 Bus Industry Agreement. Through united strike action they won the best pay and conditions drivers have enjoyed for three decades.
Our Delegates and OH&S Representatives are the beating heart of the TWU and the Union is in a good place while they are the eyes, ears, voice and muscle for members.
