TIPPER INDUSTRY UPDATE: WHEELS IN MOTION

February 19, 2018

The TWU (VIC/TAS BRANCH) happily reports that major progress has been made towards the introduction of safe rates in the tip-truck industry after the Transport Industry Council, of which the TWU is a member, last week endorsed a minimum rate for tip-truck Owner Drivers.

These rates have now been sent to Industrial Relations Minister Natalie Hutchins to be gazetted and will come into effect in the near future.

Work continues on an industry-wide Code of Conduct and rates for State Government infrastructure work.

These discussions have been taking place since Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews announced at the Branch Delegates Conference last August that the current pay-by-the-load system rife in the tipper industry would be replaced with set, minimum rates.

That announcement followed a long and sustained TWU campaign over several years to secure safe rates and improved workplace safety and security for owner drivers in the tipping industry.
