UPDATED STATEMENT REGARDING AVIATION WORKERS AS RESIDENTIAL SUPPORT OFFICERS IN COVID QUANTAINE HOTELS

Officials from the Transport Workers Union Victoria and Tasmanian Branch and aviation delegates have today met with the Corrections Commissioner Emma Cassar and the Department of Corrections and Justice.

Through these discussions, the TWU has sought clarification on the role which aviation workers will perform during their potential employment as Residential Support Officers through the Department of Justice at quarantine hotels.

Aviation workers – particularly cabin crew – were sought after, by the Department, for this work due to their expertise in customer services and de-escalation skills; both of which are front and centre in the work they perform in the air.

As a result of the meeting, the Department of Justice and Corrections has committed to conducting a weekly meeting between senior bearcats, TWU Officials and aviation delegates.
