Workers’ power on Melbourne’s buses – State Secretary visits depots

February 22, 2017

Branch Secretary John Berger has been doing the rounds and talking to TWU bus drivers about the important issues in the industry.

It’s important to recognise and appreciate these hard-working TWU members who keep us moving, get us to work, the kids to school and the whole family back together safely again at the end of the day. We will continue to fight for you.

The visits follow the State Government’s announcement in December that – every passenger bus in Victoria will be fitted with perspex security screens and loop barriers to protect drivers from the risk of violent assault following a long and hard-fought TWU campaign.

It is expected the full roll-out of new security screens on about 2000 existing buses will cost an estimated $10 million, to be split evenly between the state authority Public Transport Victoria and operators. All new buses that enter service will also have screens fitted.
